Become a Volunteer Tutor
Our volunteer tutors are the backbone of every program we offer. No teaching degree is required. We provide comprehensive training, ongoing support, and all the materials you need to make a lasting impact.
Literacy Tutor
Work one-on-one or in small groups with adult learners building foundational reading and writing skills. You will receive 50 hours of initial training in structured literacy methods (Orton-Gillingham, Wilson Reading System), adult learning theory, and assessment practices. Tutors commit to a minimum of two hours per week for at least one academic year. Sessions are held at our Oceanside main center, Vista satellite, or Carlsbad Senior Center location. Background check and tuberculosis screening are required for all volunteer positions.
ESL Conversation Partner
Support English language learners by providing structured conversational practice sessions. Conversation partners meet with ESL learners for 90 minutes weekly, following guided topic plans provided by our ESL coordinator. No second-language teaching experience is necessary. Training covers cross-cultural communication, error correction techniques, and conversation scaffolding strategies. This flexible role is ideal for retirees, college students, and professionals with limited daytime availability, as sessions are available in evenings and on Saturday mornings.
Event & Administrative Support
Not ready for the classroom? We need volunteers for our annual fundraising gala, community book drives, learner recognition ceremonies, and day-to-day administrative support including data entry, materials preparation, and front desk reception. Administrative volunteers gain valuable exposure to non-profit operations and are often the first to learn about paid staff openings. Pro bono professional services from graphic designers, web developers, accountants, and marketing specialists are always welcome.
